THE LEMON TWIGS
Everything Harmony (Captured Tracks)
With the broad appeal of its 1960s/1970s stylings, the Lemon Twigs’ 2020 LP Songs For The General Public did exactly what it said on the tin – and its successor follows suit. Everything Harmony invites you to slather on the Factor 50 and sunbathe in the warm glow of its melodies.
Call it nominative determinism or simply the consequence of exposure to a well-curated record collection from an early age, but Brian Paul D’Addario – named after Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney – and younger brother Michael frequently draw on both the Beatles and the Beach Boys.
Corner Of My Eye and I Don’t Belong To Me in particular have the feel of Wilson’s most wistful compositions. Elsewhere, Ghost Run Free is a power-pop bop, while What Happens To A Heart and Born To Be Lonely are heart-on-sleeve grand gestures. It’s a shame the Lemon Twigs have ditched the glam rags, and a couple of tracks are so sweet they’re verging on sickly – but you can’t really argue with songwriting this strong.
