DAVID BOWIE
Laughing With Liza – The Vocalian And Deram Singles (Decca)
Many regard David Bowie’s 1969 epic Space Oddity as the start of his stellar career, and while it certainly represented lift-off for him as regards the mainstream, Bowie had actually began churning out singles half a decade prior.
Laughing With Liza – The Vocalian And Deram Singles, a Record Store Day boxset of five 7” records, shines a long overdue spotlight on the years 1964-67: a time in Bowie’s career that seems all but forgotten by all but the most committed among his fanbase. While this period yielded little commercial success, there are moments of inspired writing littered throughout these compositions.
During the time before the Big Bang, every ounce of energy and matter within our universe was present, it was just… different. This wonderful collection is Bowie’s ‘before time’, and invites a new generation of listeners to peek inside the burgeoning creative mind of one of the greatest artists in history.
