One of Wales’ longest-serving musical icons, Shakin’ Stevens can now claim to have the esteemed honour of also christening our new rolling Q&A feature, Things That Made Me. He’s also pretty proud of latest album – and cultural reboot – Re-Set, but we’re certain that’s a close second place, right, Shaky? Anyway, take it away…
What’s the most recent film you’ve watched that made you cry?
Schindler’s List. Many years ago, I was on tour with my band in Poland, and we all visited a concentration camp. I will always remember the effect it had, not just on me, but on the whole team – and the film brought it all back.
Which celebrity would you be too nervous to meet? (Alive or dead)
Either of the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy – as misfortune always appeared to follow them around – added to which I wouldn’t be able to stop laughing if they did their dance routine from the film Way Out West. A total classic.
What’s the last thing you wrote in your notes app (or wherever you keep notes to yourself)?
They’re all in the lyrics of my new album – where you can check them out.
Which TV show is your guiltiest pleasure?
I grew up with black and white films, and I really love to watch one with a good story on TV on a Sunday afternoon – especially if it’s pouring with rain.
What’s the last meal you’d request on the final night of I’m A Celebrity?
That’s never gonna happen!
What song would you play for an alien who’s never heard human music before?
Simon & Garfunkel’s Homeward Bound.
What was the last outfit you wore that made you feel great?
A pair of boots that I bought in Vancouver – it then took me 10 years to decide to wear them.
If you could go back in time, which decade would you choose and why?
My mum was in her late 40s when I was born, so I’d go back to the 1930s to find out more about her and what her younger self really thought of her life.
What’s your pettiest pet peeve?
When at the boarding gate to get on a plane, people who refuse to form a queue. It probably shouldn’t annoy me, as we all have our allotted seats in the end.
What’s your favourite and least favourite recurring dream?
If I dream, then I never remember them the next day, and maybe that’s better for me – as I think a dose of reality is better for us all: and that’s the only way we’re ever going to reset the way we live our lives.
Shakin’ Stevens’ Re-Set is available now via BMG.
