SLOWTHAI
Ugly (Method)
Slowthai’s sound is evolving. Where once the Northampton artist would fall neatly into the rap genre – notably his previous work’s grime beats and features – Ugly, on the other hand, connects Tyrone Frampton’s angsty vocals satisfyingly with plenty of guitars, some indie choruses and features to match (including Fontaines DC and Jockstrap’s Taylor Skye).
Dan Carey’s production on the album shines through – it’s different for the hip-hopper, but it does actually work. Sooner could’ve come straight out of Jamie T’s early catalogue, and Feel Good is an aptly named, fun single that may make rap fans a bit hesitant about the album. Luckily, though, Slowthai’s still spitting in track Fuck It Puppet.
The album title acronymises ‘U Gotta Love Yourself’, and Ty’s raw self-analysis is a key theme mixed with his usual honest social commentary with lyrics like “Rich get rich and I been one of them… I still see it in my friends, the jealousy.”
