PORIJ
Teething (Play It Again Sam)
When Metronomy headlined Cardiff’s Tramshed venue two years ago, support act Porij struck me as ones to watch. The four-piece had the crowd rapt, with singer and keyboard player Egg breathing fire and ice like a UK rave version of Little Dragon. Since then, they’ve built up a good following and growing hype via the 6music playlist – with debut LP Teething delivering on that promise.
You may know plenty of its tracks already. When the chorus of Unpredictable drops, it will kick the dancefloor into shape; The XX-meets-UK garage of My Only Love is a potent mix of melancholy and nifty footwork, and there’s a heady technicolour rush in You Should Know Me that draws upon 80s and 90s UK rave producers like Baby Ford.
Teething is well-sequenced, too: opening with the off-kilter melody of Marmite, its muted drums and bass arriving with a warning (“One glance, you don’t stand a fucking chance / So let’s dance!” and closing with the airy and ethereal Slow Down. A salve for the mind and body.
