Miranda July is a multidisciplinary artist – a filmmaker, actress and writer – and All Fours is her third book, following debut novel The First Bad Man and cult classic short story collection No One Belongs Here More Than You.
In All Fours, the main character is a semi-famous artist in her mid-40s who decides to leave her LA home for three weeks, attempting a crosscountry trip to New York. There is a hope of an important work meeting at the end of the trip, smartly limiting her time away from her husband and child, but the protagonist never makes it to New York, or even out of Caliafornia. What follows is a story told in four parts, beginning with a fantasy-like, fever dream of a timeline that will make readers miss their bus stops and then following up with the reality of her domestic life shuttering the make-believe.
All Fours speaks of the institution of marriage, the sexual freedom of middle-aged women, the space required for creativity and dreams to develop. Nobody sees the world the way July does: her way of interacting with every human emotion from rage to desire to heartbreak is so unique it is at times breathtaking, just like her writing itself can be. Already one of the books of the year, this is destined to become a classic and potentially change the lives of its readers.
