It is a slightly miserable Tuesday night and yet Clwb Ifor Bach is packed out. Why? For the brilliant electronic duo of Georgia Ellery and Taylor Skye – better known as Jockstrap, whose recent album I Love You Jennifer B has won widespread critical acclaim. It’s no surprise that tonight’s festivities are sold out, like nearly every other date of their UK tour. Arriving on stage to the sound of thunder and lightning, Ellery and Skye already have the room in their hands with a double salvo of Neon and Jennifer B delighting.
From very early on, it’s clear from the duo’s stage presence and use of the limited lighting in Clwb that Jockstrap are already destined for much bigger things, and seeing them in a room like tonight’s will soon become a rarity. Ellery is ethereal on stage – showing off her multi-instrumentalist talents several times switching between guitar and violin – while Skye provides the big electronic beats that cause the room to shake at nearly every opportunity. Songs such as Robert and The City really come alive, especially as the latter builds from its acoustic beginnings to its big dirty electronic second half.
It is however Glasgow, Concrete Over Water and 50/50 that satisfy the most sounding somehow tender and soft yet absolutely massive at the same time. Finishing their set with an encore of I Want Another Affair (Taylor Skye Remix), it’s clear that Jockstrap deserve all the praise coming their way: they are ridiculously fun, both on record and live.
