LAURA CANNELL & ANDRÉ BOSMAN
New Christmas Rituals (Brawl)
Self-taught violinists and longtime collaborators Laura Cannell and André Bosman offer an ambitious alternate dimension to Christmas with a reflective rendition of early folk carols, New Christmas Rituals. The nine instrumentals weave Cannell’s signature overbow violin, Bosman’s amplified fiddle, and a bass guitar. The album is a follow-up to Cannell’s 2020 EP Winter Rituals, a collaboration with cellist Kate Ellis.
New Christmas Rituals is a sublime record; it reimagines the past to give our celebrations a much deeper meaning. From the Victorian Deck The Halls to the eighth century’s O Come, O Come Emmanuel, these compositions are a fresh substitute for the hasty pop-laden Christmas we are accustomed to. They inflict hope but also gravity, inviting you to catch your breath, step away from the party, take a seat by the fire, and get caught up in thought.
