BUZZARD BUZZARD BUZZARD
Backhand Deals (Communion)
Fast becoming the leaders of the Cardiff indie scene, new album Backhand Deals is is truly an outstanding debut from Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard. After teasing their ever-growing fanbase with EP after EP, frontman Tom Rees and his fellow bandmates have put together a collection of songs they’re prepared to package as an album proper. And it’s a perfect balance of all the elements we’ve come to expect from a band surely on the cusp of greatness.
The production is clean and radio-friendly, content to let the playing and songs shine. Lead single opener New Age Millennial Magic sets the tone of irony-laden self-knowledge and standout Crescent Man vs Demolition Dan continues the theme. While more intimate moments can be found (Yourself) there is distinct confidence in the light rock sound of Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard on this album that certainly isn’t soft and, surprisingly, brings Queen’s mid-period albums like Jazz to mind. A band to watch before they truly take off.
