ALEX G
God Save The Animals (Domino)
Alex Giannaloski’s ninth and latest album is a disjointed offering. Its title is less of an exclamation and more of a plea, with God present throughout many of these 13 tracks. The recurrent themes of gratitude and hope to some sort of higher power – if not a capital ‘G’ god, some other omniscience of one’s choosing – are buried underneath myriad sounds, and won’t put off listeners with atheistic tendencies. Equally, these themes don’t tie together the songs’ very disparate threads.
Giannaloski deliberately took his demos to a bunch of different producers and engineers to work on them, but the difference in sound isn’t the issue. God Save The Animals just doesn’t hang together stylistically as Giannaloski swerves between Nirvana-type noisemaking, Beck-like beats and modern, messy indie grooves. An album that may have an impact onstage, where the songs can settle into something substantial and connect with an audience.
