THE LAZY EYES
Songbook (Lunatic)
After EP releases and creating quite a stir with their enigmatic live performances, The Lazy Eyes show their full potential on Songbook, an excellent debut album. With an aesthetic that leans more towards the prog-rock/psychedelic side of the late ‘60s, this Sydney four-piece have conjured up a collection of blistering compositions with much more scope than the title, Songbook implies.
Although their soundworld may be firmly located on the West Coast of America or hipper streets of London over half a century ago, there is nothing borrowed about their invention and originality. Imaginary Girl and Fuzz Jam are great examples of the different ends of their kaleidoscopic view of the world. Lazy Eyes’ Frontman Harvey Geraghty’s heavily affected (and affected) voice suits the two beautiful closing songs perfectly but it’s the instrumental work on Intro, Hippo and Where’s My Brain that really show what this band can do.
