The Unit, Swansea
Sat 14 May
Get a headful of hard, with almost a whole rugby team’s worth of Welsh boys smashing out some rippers. There’s no big name guests but plenty of local talent, headed up by a live set from Dan Jones and Matt Griffin, who produce under the name of BLAP. They haven’t released any records yet but have a Soundcloud page full of grimacing, black cloud beats which they say are inspired by the likes of Surgeon and Karenn – hopefully Truss too, another hard-as-nails techno crafter who in fact comes from South Wales (not a lot of people know that). On the night, they’ll be recreating the rough stuff on the fly with an array of hardware. Elsewhere on the lineup are Luke Winds, resident DJ at Cardiff’s Holodeck, along with Lewis Elsey, Nicky Hewitt, Sam Balla, Sean Morris and Rhys Jenkins supply the rhythms, not to mention the promoters themselves, Blake Parker and Jason Wilkinson.
After spending so much time travelling to techno events in the UK and Europe, the pair were inspired to get something off the ground in Swansea, taking a cue from the sounds of contemporary underground techno names like Dax J, Ansome and Stranger, as well as the scene in London and Birmingham. The latter city has long been a pioneering hotbed of mindwarping techno since the House Of God nights in the 90s, where Surgeon was a resident. Forward the South Wales techno militia!
