O
MILES KANE
One Man Band (Modern Sky Records)
Despite a confusing amalgamation of sounds on latest album One Man Band, Miles Kane still doesn’t fail to shine during the record’s less imposing moments.
Having returned to Liverpool to work on the album, Kane has clearly made an effort to reconnect with his music; there are moments that are unequivocally him amid others that somewhat miss the mark, such as overproduced sing-along tracks Troubled Son and Heartbreaks (The New Sensations).
In Never Taking Me Alive, meanwhile, Kane references Hollywood A-listers like De Niro and Pacino, but his too-cool attitude fails to make a mark with overdone ‘ooos’ and uninspired chanting. The latter half of One Man Band is his trademark indie sleaze done well: The Wonder is a melodically woozy track that feels very Miles Kane.
Equally, sincerity can be found in romantic tracks like Ransom and Scared Of Love, which outshine the indie bravado he was seemingly trying to escape all along.
