THE SHERLOCKS
People Like Me And You (Teddyboy)
Yorkshire four-piece The Sherlocks’ fourth album, People Like Me And You, is bursting with unifying stadium belters about adolescent love and heartbreak, most songs synonymous with a liberation fuelled only by chanting crowds and distorted guitar solos. Energising and exhilarating, People Like Me And You confirms the prevailing appeal of formulaic indie rock.
While still recalling the trad sounds of Arctic Monkeys and Stereophonics, there are also experimental layers of voice recordings and synth, that lend an indie sleaze vibe to the title track. More profound endeavours in Face The Music are emphasised, following a discordant 30-second interlude Any Old Iron, and finale Watson – a unique combination of a clichéd monologue, snippets of a past Sherlocks member’s voice and even Oliver Twist – nostalgically reaffirms overarching themes of unity, growth, and purpose.
Although The Sherlocks’ newer, serious attitudes are undermined by their liveliness, People Like Me And You ultimately reflects on the past while anticipating the future with a captivating hope and exuberance.
