FAR FROM SAINTS
Far From Saints (Ignition)
Kelly Jones masterminded the Stereophonics’ rise from another group of lads with guitars to one of the most successful UK bands of the last 30 years. As frontman, sole lyric writer and face of the band, the chance to share that creative burden with Patty Lynn and Dwight Baker (together known as The Wind And The Wave) and explore a genre of music he has always had an affinity for was an opportunity Jones could not turn down.
After touring together, the three felt immediate musical chemistry. One live cover of Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks’ classic Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around later, they began to explore co-writing sessions after shows and in dressing rooms; this record was recorded in just nine days.
Far From Saints have little intention of reinventing the wheel with this album, a collection of Americana/blues songs – albeit ones performed and sung fantastically. But that doesn’t mean it lacks individuality or originality. The blending of Jones and Lynn’s vocals – the two voices intertwining as though they were crafted specifically to complement each other – and the natural songwriting talents of each member delivers high quality. Lyrically, melodically and harmonically, Far From Saints sticks the landing from start to finish: the Great American Songbook has its latest entry, and this time it comes via the Welsh Valleys…
