In Claire McGlasson’s unique and fascinating adventure, set in 1930s Blackpool and based on historical events, protagonist Margaret Finch has moved to the Lancashire town, working as a researcher for the mass observation project. A chance encounter with one Harold Davidson – the infamous former rector of Stiffkey, now disgraced – leads to an interesting side project for Margaret as she observes the crowds that are flocking to view the spectacle of his personal exhibition.
Flashbacks into Margaret’s past explain much of her behaviour as she deals with conflicting emotions during her relationships with the rector, and her colleague James as her personal and professional life collide. It’s captivating to think about past events and observing the masses produced the perfect segway to reimagining the era which the author conveys magnificently, illuminated by the descriptions of some of the sideshows that were on offer to draw the crowds to the seaside resort.
McGlasson’s main profession is as a reporter, and it’s clear that elements of the skilled research and storytelling have been brought to bear on this thoroughly entertaining and original novel. The Misadventures Of Margaret Finch proves to be the ideal transporting tale.
