THE COMET IS COMING
Hyper-Dimensional Expansion Beam (Impulse!)
The hardest working man in the sax industry, Shabaka Hutchings, continues to send sunbursts across the universe of futuristic dance music, alongside drummer Betamax and synth-playing producer Danalogue. There’s an explosion of energy across The Comet Is Coming’s fourth album: the muscular Code’s ravey keyboard riff and frenzied climax, the gnarled synth stabs of Pyramids and fiery early 90s techno on Atomic Wave Dance.
The darker corners of drum’n’bass are located on Mystik and Angel Of Darkness, though it’s not all aimed at the dancefloor, midtempo headnodder Frequency Of Feeling Expansion for example. Lucid Dreamer is ripe for savouring a warm Balearic sunset, Aftermath has a world music feel fluttering across a Tangerine Dream pulse, and there’s a nice squelchy synth on The Hammer, even if Hutchings’ sax seems overly frenzied for the downtempo BPM of its first two minutes. All in all, another leap into hyperspace.
