Respected musical prodigies Kit Downes, an award winning jazz pianist (best known for his work with his progressive jazz trio) and Lucy Railton, a contemporary classical cellist (curator of London Contemporary Music Festival and frequent collaborator with modern dance company Akram Khan) convene here at a intriguing musical standpoint, whereby they can both flourish to audiences old and new.
Otherwise recognised under the alias Tricko, this duet, coordinated by Downes, embraces improvisation, minimalism, classical and jazz disciplines and is at once wildly imaginative and gracefully reserved.
Both musicians committed their efforts to recording last year and have received critical acclaim from their engrossing album as well as their similarly enticing live shows. The compositions presented don’t strike as conventional in the slightest, with each instrument featured generously throughout, intuitively exploring and interweaving melodies and ideas but without overpowering one another. It will doubtlessly appeal to those of an open mind when it comes to either genre (classical or jazz) as the musicians are admittedly very free with their influences and aren’t necessarily trying to comply to the rules of either genre.
Whilst this does often push the sounds into angular, avant-garde territories, they’re also not hesitant to create some real poignant, intense and emotional moments. Above all, those attending should expect something entirely fresh sounding that’ll doubtlessly be unlike anything you’ve ever heard before.
