FRANKIE COSMOS
Inner World Peace (Sub Pop}
Pre-existing fans of Frankie Cosmos – an indie four-piece of the traditional drums/keyboard/bass/guitar variety, fronted by Greta Kline – will be glad to see that there’s been only a slight upgrade to their formula of winsome two-minute indiepop, sweet with two sugars and on the right side of twee, on Inner World Peace.
Fruit Stand is a sweet and sour take on romance (“By the time I wake up, you will be gone / Like a fruit stand in the evening”); Magnetic Personality has fire in its belly, plugging into the powerpop grid with a riot grrrl attitude. Wayne and Sky Magnet are rich with fleetfooted melodies, like early Cardigans at their best. Work Call and Empty Head slow things right down before picking up the pace, with the latter number struggling to clear the mind of a myriad of thoughts to live in the present, yet resolving itself over five minutes of dreamy pop.
