Known for a wide compositional career, this new remix of Danny Elfman’s previous album Big Mess continues the diverse taste in his ever-increasing palette. Whereas his velvety voice shines through in the first album, Bigger. Messier. is just that. There are gurgling, spattering moments with nods to dubstep, 90s house and a vein of intense rock patter.
Trent Reznor and Xiu Xiu make ecstatic appearances, the former taking the spotlight for a few tracks. Iggy Pop has a surreal turn in the baffling Kick Me, the reins were then taken by Fever333 in another twisted rendition of the same track.
A highlight is Happy from Boy Harsher: a love letter to all things new romantic, Elfman’s deep voice permeating throughout, this is my official new bop and a track that could easily go viral on TikTok. Truly, a queasy assortment of curiosities that should find some appeal.
