ORBITAL
30 Something (London)
In 1990, Paul and Phil Hartnoll of Orbital – two brothers who had grown up listening to postpunk mavericks such as Cabaret Voltaire – created a top 20 rave and chart hit for less than a fiver in a cupboard in their Kent home.
Not only did Chime get Orbital on Top Of The Pops adorned in their anti-Poll Tax t-shirts, but it also kickstarted three decades of global success that has done as much influentially as it has catapulted electronic dance music from raves and underground clubs to massive venues and audiences more generally associated with rock.
Now is the time to celebrate three decades of Orbital, with 30 Something: not a lazily compiled best-of, but a selection of Orbital’s finest tracks rejigged and remixed for optimum aural effect. The reworked, and all the more aptly titled, Impact (30 Years Later And The Earth is Still Burning Mix) and David Holmes’ remix of Belfast are worth the price of entry alone.
