BUCK MEEK
Haunted Mountain (4AD)
With Big Thief, Buck Meek is known for tender guitar licks that add to the band’s wistful architecture. He often joins their lead member Adrianne Lenker to cool the crowds in soothing whispers, while his solo records create even softer landscapes. On Haunted Mountain, his third solo album – the first to be released on 4AD, also Big Thief’s label – he draws a world that feels so vital.

It is all about love; not only romantic, but for all there is, in folk and country arrangements that never sounded more certain. The opener Mood Ring puts nature on a pedestal; Meek sings of a blue moon, ladybugs and butterflies, a love unfolding just as naturally while their “secrets told themselves”.
There are many special moments like Secret Side when he comes to terms with the inability to understand everything about a partner, but the title track remains by far the most memorable listen. Haunted Mountain is a gentle ode to the joy of feeling, delivered in a stream of consciousness at its earnest and most honest.
