AMY DUNCAN
Cocoon (Filly)
Inspired by falling in love with a new electric piano, Cocoon from Amy Duncan is a departure from her usual acoustic sound world. Chords sit and shimmer underneath expansive melodies that really show off Duncan’s excellent range and tone. The result can often border on Enya, or Vespertine-era Bjӧrk, both good things in my book, but this nine-song album really flies when the rhythm section is allowed to spread its wings.
Cocoon‘s lead single A Door Is Opening and Warrior, featuring Guy Nicolson’s excellent tabla playing, have a great impetus that can be lacking on some of the less moving tracks. But Amy Duncan is a unique writer, happy to let the songs say all they need to and then be sure to not let them outstay their welcome. Based on this offering, I’d like to hear more.
