Former X-Factor star Amelia Lily spoke with Ffion Riordan-Jones about coming to Cardiff playing a leading role in American Idiot: the Musical.
How did you get the role of Whatsername?
So basically I was on tour with Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat, and I got a call from my agent explaining that American Idiot were auditioning. I went down and met all the producers and it went really well and I got the part!
Although you have had stage practice before, how has X-Factor helped with preparing for this role?
X-Factor was absolutely amazing! It was honestly the best thing I have ever done in my life. I’m so lucky to have had the experience and now to be in the theatre at only 21 is really great.
Looking forward to performing in Cardiff?
Yes I am so excited! I have never actually performed in the New Theatre but I absolutely love Wales! Emma, one of our cast members, is from Wales so we are all looking forward to see what Cardiff has to offer.
What are your thoughts on Green Day after performing in American Idiot?
Of course I knew who Green Day were, but I have really learnt a lot about them since. I really respect them as a band, they’re absolutely insane. I haven’t met them, but I have met their tour manager which was amazing, but it would be an absolute honour to meet them.
What have you got planned for the rest of the year after this tour?
I definitely want to carry on with theatre. Of course I will never say no to music but I am loving this experience on the American Idiot tour. In the future I would love to try TV presenting, but for now I’m happy on the stage.
What advice would you give to those who want a career in the theatre or singing?
I have taken a lot of knock backs, but it has only made me a stronger person. The best advice I can give to someone who wants to pursue singing is just go for it! Go for it and most importantly just be yourself.
If you could sum up your American Idiot experience in 3 words, what would they be?
Energetic, exciting and powerful.
