Aberystwyth Students Union
Fri 6 May
Set phasers to chunder for a cosmic-themed uni ball open to all, chocked full of funky, poppy bands, punishing and pop-friendly drum’n’bass, as well as just straight-up pop. This night has been concocted in association with Aberystwyth’s long-running promoter Black House, aka ‘Captain’ Kirk Holland, who branched out of Aberystwyth at the end of April to bring Featurecast to the cleverly named Workhouse Project at Llanfyllin’s Victorian venue. The team have brought down a divisive mix of bands and DJs, but it’s way more than just getting one of the guys from JLS to do a DJ set, innit!
At the least appetising end of the lineup, you’ve got Marvin Hume presents Luv Bug (one of the guys from JLS doing a DJ set), and 5ive, or Five, however it’s spelt. But you’ve also got Everything Everything, a very successful and energetic band inspired by Talking Heads in the past and Franz Ferdinand, Foals and Alt-J in the present day. There’s a double whammy of high-octane mainstream-crossover drum’n’bass DJs in the form of the chart-bothering DJ Fresh and the BBC Radio wiz Jaguar Skills.
The night is fairly high concept from the sounds of it, with zones called things like the Blackhole, the Launch Pad and the possibly JG Ballard-inspired Inner Space, but who knows how far they will be following it through.
