Novotel Hotel, Schooner Way, Cardiff Bay. 029 2113 2800
Food **** Atmosphere ***
Revamped and sympathetically decked out, the Goods Shed – as this restaurant space within the Novotel Hotel is now known – has the industrial look that seems to be the go-to aesthetic choice at present. Having said that, the décor does at least reflect the history of the building and stays true to its historic appearance, while the bar is converted from the original railway goods shed of the London & North Western Railway on Cardiff Bay’s Bute Docks.
The interior retains many of the original features. With a vast cocktail list at reasonable prices and a big selection of craft beers and ales, hand-selected wines and spirits, it makes a change from the usual dull hotel bars.
The food is good – nothing spectacular, but solid all-rounder fare including an Italian selection, (primarily) local meat and seafood and a range of mains and platters from the smokery. Steak ciabatta, a cheddar cheese platter, smoked salmon fishcakes and smoky pulled pork are a fairly representative sample, as well as selection of seafood dishes. Our respective main courses were chargrilled Cornish sea bass and the Goods Shed burger – which I am reliably informed was amazing. The dining experience is enhanced by the interesting décor, great cocktails and the overall feel of the place.
As part of a national chain the Novotel hotel and bar does offer a perfect getaway. With the spa and treatments available, it’s a welcoming place to stay with the bonus of a hotel bar and restaurant that actually stands alone. Great spot for a weekend stay.
