Find out what’s on in South Wales this week
Cardiff foodies wake up and smell the coffee as Street Food Circus (John St Building, Cardiff, Fri 1 May-Sun 28 June. Admission: Free) is the brand new pop-up place to be for chilled out, street market vibes. With 12 rotating food trucks you get a taste from all corners of the world which paired with craft beers, ‘Kooktails’ and a circus infusion creates a holiday from home.
Ever wanted to watch a film and feel the wind in your hair at the same time? No me neither, but for film buffs, The Rooftop Cinema (Jacobs Market Rooftop, Cardiff, Fri 1-Sat 2 May, 6pm-11pm. Tickets: £13) provides the perfect alfresco experience. Tickets for The Breakfast Club have already sold out, but with 14 other classic films shown across the summer I think we’ve found our new sunny spot.
Cardiff born and bred, Astroid Boys (Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff, Mon 27 Apr. Tickets: £7-£9) have the whole team back (after Benji’s short stint inside) and are fighting fit in time for their CF10 Tour. With their unique blend of Grime, Metal, Hip-hop and Hardcore, Astroid Boys are a genre in themselves and the tour pays homage to the City that made them.
The music continues as Red Sun Festival (Various venues, Cardiff, Fri 1-Sun 3 May. Tickets: £20 weekend advance) is bringing three days of shredding heavy riffs across Cardiff’s more alternative hang-outs. Expect heavy metal rockers in tow as the underground scene comes up for air and bloody well makes the most of it.
Don’t be alarmed if you see a swarm of the dead walking through your picnic at Bute Park as it’s just the annual Cardiff Zombie Walk (Bute Park, Cardiff, Sat 2 Apr. Admission: Free). Any age can join the 2.68 mile walk raising money for various charities which will end with live music and I’m sure one or two drinks.
Tucked away in The Other Room of Porters, A Good Clean Heart (The Other Room, Porters, Cardiff, Tues 28-Thurs 30 Apr & Fri 1-Sat 16 May. Tickets: £12.50 standard/£10.50 concession) tells a tale of two brothers raised apart in this new bilingual play by young playwright, Alun Saunders. With only 44 seats it will be an intimate affair bringing you an intense and truly accessible live theatre experience.
On a lighter note, let’s welcome the Return Of The Grumpy Old Women (Swansea Grand Theatre, Swansea, Sat 2 May. Tickets: £23.00) and their new show Fifty Shades of Beige (providing more cheek I can assure you). Award winning comedian, Jenny Eclair, fronts the clan and sets the world to rights with her fab one liners and taboo topics that, let’s face it, are done with the right amount of silliness.
Sail your ears for the night as Belle and Sebastian (St David’s Hall, Cardiff, Sun 3 May. Tickets: £25/£27.50) kick off their tour in Cardiff, bringing their newly found pop groove sound to a live audience, after the release of their 9th studio album Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance.
With the heat wave burning away our blues, Feels Like Summer Festival (Gwdihw, Cardiff, Sun 3 May. Tickets: £10/£12) couldn’t be more aptly named. Two stages of music set inside and out of Gwdihws small kooky house is the perfect setting for proper festival vibes. Oh and don’t forgot the after party for those nights owls.
Want your dance, music and spoken word fix all in one evening? Try this daring piece of contemporary dance by Dam Van Huynh Company. Gesundheit! (Aberystwyth Art Centre, Aberystwyth, Thurs 30 Apr. Tickets: £4.25-£8.50) steps in and strips conventions with a raw honesty watching three characters unravel in their relationships in an intense encounter, that invites you to join a more interactive experience of dance.
