Mission Gallery, Swansea

Claire Barclay brings her work to Wales for the first time. The Scottish artist is known for creating large pieces of art work, which are a direct response to the space in which they are being displayed.
In this upcoming exhibition, she will be reworking previously made pieces from her exhibitions in Tramway in Glasgow and Kelvin Hall for Glasgow International, giving these pieces a new lease of life whilst changing their context.
The sculptures she creates will aim to reflect the industrial heritage of Swansea, while also showing the level of physical human labour that those working in the coal, pottery and copper industries of the past would have faced.
Through her artwork, Barclay uses the space to create juxtapositions between the space and the art displayed. She draws on the link between the materials she uses and the relationships these could have with the endeavour of the human body.
In particular, Barclay draws inspiration from the physical strength and vulnerability involved in the skilled manual work of the city’s people. She links the use of her materials and sculptural forms to the clear resilience of the human body.
Claire Barclay describes the making of her exhibitions as being a “pause in an ongoing process”, allowing people to take a look back in time whilst appreciating the craftsmanship that goes into the production of such work.
