WESTERMAN
An Inbuilt Fault (Partisan)
An Inbuilt Fault is somehow more beautiful and considered than what came before from Westerman. Sonically speaking, it’s not a complete left turn from this UK musician’s distinctly atmospheric pop, and Give remains a somewhat subdued exposition, but there are rewards to be unearthed for those who listen.
This second album is less sparse, both melodically and texturally. Will Westerman – as he’s formally known – has crafted his storytelling, makes use of a wider range of forces and embraces his unique vocals at the front of the mix, showing off his range in I, Catullus. He’s almost broken off his love affair with synths, with both the title track and Idol: Re-Run favouring an acoustic feel, forged in the vast harmonies, steadfast guitar, and muted brass. Take, though, is practically jazzy – brushed percussion, bluesy keyboard and nimble bassline.
Westerman is altogether less restrained on his second album. Listen to A Lens Turning – sure to be a favourite with live audiences – and you’ll hear music full to the brim with original ideas.
