TURNOVER
Myself In The Way (Run For Cover)
For their fifth release, Virginia band Turnover have returned with a funky dreamlike 12-track album sporting guest vocals from Brendan Yates of Turnstile, Justin Barlett and Bre Morell. The album opens with a 30-second taster track, Stone Station, before Myself In The Way’s title track echoes Daft Punk, while frontman Austin Getz gives Tame Impala-style vocals at times. Later on, Mountains Made Of Clouds’ dreamy intro makes it an instant favourite of mine.
Turnover’s music has always morphed genres together – call it emo-kind-of-punk-indie-rock – and Myself In The Way has a nice mix of their ever-changing sound. Although lyrically Turnover isn’t groundbreaking, and some songs are more compelling than others on the vocal side of things, Nick Rayfield’s guitar parts and Casey Getz’s drums make up for it.
A good display of Turnover’s dynamic sound; this will be my new go-to album when I need a pause from the real world and to relax to some smooth jazzy indie tunes.
