THEE SACRED SOULS
Thee Sacred Souls (Daptone)
After just a handful of club shows, this south Californian group were enthusiastically snapped up for a record deal by Brooklyn independent label Daptone. On listening to the band’s eponymous debut album, it is evident as to why the Black Pumas and Timbaland champion the San Diego trio.
Album opener Can I Call You Rose has been listened to online by millions and is a good indicator of what to expect on an album overflowing with contagiously soulful tunes that match Al Green for heartache and Curtis Mayfield for consciousness.
The group have their own intricate style that draws inspiration from an eclectic palate: a modern take on The Sound of Philadelphia colliding with Stax in Memphis is possibly one way to describe it. The doo-wop laced Trade Of Hearts is sublime, as is Josh Lane’s voice throughout, and as a whole, this debut album is a collection of beautiful, cleverly worded and timeless soul tracks.
