THE MURDER CAPITAL
Gigi’s Recovery (Human Season)
Opening with the short and slightly discomforting Existence, it’s clear that COVID and lockdowns hasn’t caused Dublin’s The Murder Capital to lose their dark depressing edge. Crying waters its Radiohead In Rainbows influence, frontman James McGovern’s postpunk lilt delivering his sorrows to wonderful effect, and highlight A Thousand Lives sounds like a distorted remoulded version of that album’s Weird Fishes / Arpeggi before building into something only TMC could deliver: particularly McGovern’s subtly venomous delivery of the line “A thousand lives with you and I won’t be enough.”
The Stars Will Leave Their Stage, Ethel and Only Good Things will doubtless become welcome additions to the band’s already-intense live sets, each adding emotional depth to an album not remotely lacking in it. Gigi’s Recovery is a sophomore banger from The Murder Capital, losing none of their debut’s passion, love, and loss while simultaneously adding something softer to their bow.
