Terry Setch is seen as an important and influential figure in the Welsh art scene. Most of his work was created after 1980 and explores the theme of tension between society and nature. Sometimes, the tension morphs into a fusion between the environment and synthetic elements. Setch, like many artists, has strong political opinions that he expresses through his art, and the devastating impact of pollution is unsurprisingly frequently explored in his work. It is worth contemplating why many Welsh artists are inspired by this theme, and it’s likely because of Wales’ own history and contrast of the beautiful countryside and historical mining towns. If you draw inspiration from Terry’s work but you are not a very good painter here are 100+ creative art project ideas that you could try.
Setch uses nature in his work in original ways. He allows the elemental forces of the beach, such as the wind and the seawater, to transform his materials. As Terry, himself says “The beach has the power to shape everything it touches into its own image.”
This unusual artist’s latest exhibition is filled with pieces pursuing his active interest in unity and disunity, order and disruption. However, his dark and chaotic pieces may not be for everyone. Without prior appreciation of his thoughts on the environment, his paintings resemble a brown and grey mass. Come to BayArt to judge for yourself, and join in an artistic conversation that is central to the Welsh creative community.
