SUM 41
Heaven :x: Hell (Rise)
Announced as the band’s final album, Heaven :x: Hell presents two sides of Sum 41’s musical identity. The first half, Heaven, shows off their ability to still perform in their trademark vivacious pop-punk style; second half Hell sees Deryck Whibley and company continuing the metal and hardcore trajectory that has defined their later output.
There is more to this album than nostalgia, which is evident through the strength of the songs. Moments like Landmines offer joyous zeal whose potency recalls the band’s early days, while the visceral rage of Rise Up demonstrates their growth as musicians and songwriters. Overall, this proves a brilliant note to bow out on, calling back to past successes whilst bearing a unique identity. The scene this band grew up as part of is one that many are nostalgic about, yet through their musical evolution, Sum 41 proved they could transcend it.
