SKINNY PELEMBE
Hardly The Same Snake (Partisan)
You may not have heard of him yet, but Skinny Pelembe is certain to leave his mark sometime soon. Known for working outside of genre, Pelembe – real name Doya Beardmore – has an indie rock aesthetic with a dark edge. On second album Hardly The Same Snake, he offers a more abrasive sound and brings the nuances of his singing voice to the fore.
The album begins with a jolty, theatrical incantation in Same Eye Colour. And the title track is bluesy yet sinister, equal parts silky and staccato. Sandwiched in the middle of the album is the prowling Don’t Be Another and lead single Oh, Silly George, both deliciously catchy. However, it’s the thunderous Like A Heart Won’t Beat that makes me most excited for what is to come from Skinny Pelembe in the future— the track is polished and confident, building to a rousing conclusion.
