SHYGIRL
Club Shy (Because)
Following a string of club nights, South London-born Shygirl transports her listeners to Club Shy: an EP charged with her own combined experiences of nightclub culture, from the heat of the crowd to the intensity behind the decks. In that, there’s a tangible reality to the setlist flow of Shy’s latest release, and what unfolds is a raver’s paradise – a sweaty room, entrancing strobe lights, and the energy of bodies too close together.
Sticking to her experimental guns, and with the help of producers like Sega Bodega and Kingdom, Shygirl brings a deconstructed and darker edge to the lighter qualities of electronic dance music on Club Shy. The repetitive lyrics and interesting yet unvarying beat of Mute makes for a hypnotic track, with Zouai’s verse briefly pulling you out of its trance – while standout single Thicc is a suitable closer choice, accumulating in a euphoric release in time for the final chorus: “Give me just a sip, give me / Why does this give me nothing…”
