REAL ESTATE
Daniel (Domino)
Real Estate have always had movement and light in their songs, painting a picture of places, seasons and times of day. On sixth album Daniel it’s no different. Interior gently places us in the passenger seat, passing by Riverside Drive and later Market Street, with the rhythm section providing forward motion. The sun is shining in Haunted World and in Freeze Brain. This is classic Real Estate.
The craftmanship of lead single Water Underground sounds effortless: its lyrics a metaphor for the songwriting process, Martin Courtney’s laidback vocals cascading over trickling melodies, hazy harmonies and a mesmerising bassline. We get to the jangly guitars of the bridge and it’s a welcome return to 2011’s Days; Victoria goes a little bit country and You Are Here has a bit more edge, but generally, it’s the same breezy college rock, if not a little more grown-up after 15 years as Real Estate.
