The Moon Club, Cardiff
Tue 24 May
Hot on the heels of the raucous, sold out Saul Williams show they put on in Clwb Ifor Bach in March, local promoters Rockpie are back with another gem of quirky, intelligent hip-hop, in the form of Open Mike Eagle, a California-based, hyper-talented rhymer with a lot to say. Check out Very Much Money (Ice King Dream) from 2014’s superb Dark Comedy, which rails against a system that has left creative, talented young people unable to make a living from their talent.
This is a guy who articulates social and personal ills with comedy, whimsy and wit over often spiky and twisted production, which often brings to mind El-P’s landmark work on Cannibal Ox’s Iron Galaxy. He’s also the voice/brain behind the excellent Second Skin podcast, a must-listen for hip-hop fans.
Support at the show has been confirmed as the exciting Milo, AKA Rory Ferreira, a Milwaukee (Milwaukian? Milwaukish?) rapper, and former labelmate of Eagle on the influential Hellfyre Club label. Additionally, as with the Saul Williams show, Rockpie are taking the opportunity of the drag of touring names to promote some local underground talent – this time in the form of Bristol’s Mike Dennis, who mixes beats, rhymes, loop pedals and a violin to unique effect. It should be a special night.
