Transporter Bridge, Newport
Wed 3-Tue 16 Oct
Herman Melville’s masterpiece Moby Dick has been re-imagined for a 21st century audience by Newport’s Tin Shed Theatre Company. The classic tale follows the story of Ishmael, a young man desperate to see the watery expanses of the world. He retells the story of his voyage on the Pequod, where Captain Ahab is obsessed with finding the whale, Moby Dick, with whom he’d previously had a violent encounter and is bent on revenge.
Tin Shed consists of Justin Cliffe, Georgina Harris and Peter Farago – two theatre makers and a visual and audio artist. Their aim is to create theatre in unusual places for non-traditional audiences; they’re no strangers to adapting classics, either, having previously written and performed Dr Frankenstein’s Travelling Freak Show which merged clippings of Shelley’s novel with a 19th century ‘freak show’ aesthetic.
Staying true to their ethos, they have chosen to set Moby Dick in a unique location: on the Newport Transporter Bridge, atop the gondola that transports visitors across the river Usk, where they’ll be working with residents, local professionals, and non-professional actors. This being Tin Shed Theatre’s biggest production to date, it’ll be interesting to see how they can pull of a production in such a unique spot – whales arising out of the river, perhaps?
