MACKLEMORE
BEN (Bendo LLC)
In his first outing since 2017’s Gemini, one of hip-hop’s most popular figures introduces us to a new, more serious side of the man behind the music. Titled BEN after his first name, here Macklemore strips back the curtain in parts, and lays bare the man behind the music. It’s a side of him that casual listeners would rarely get a glimpse of, but one that is responsible for BEN’s most inspired moments.
Lead single Heroes, the 90s West Coast-inspired Tears, and album highlight Gods Will are examples of an artist painting their rawest emotions down on the tape, while showcasing a level of flow and lyrical inventiveness not heard in his previous efforts.
With a lengthy 15 tracks, it won’t be too surprising to hear there is a batch of filler, much of it rather uneventful. But the moments of genuine brilliance dotted throughout BEN make it a very worthwhile listen.
