Edited by Elaine Canning, selected by Jane Fraser and named in honour of a prolific prose writer with more than 100 short stories to his name, a mixed range of subjects combine to form Harvest: The Rhys Davies Short Story Award Anthology. Drawn from entries to a competition set up to recognise the best unpublished short stories by writers from or currently living in Wales, its winner is accompanied by 11 further finalists in this collection celebrating its 10th year.

Matthew G. Rhys’ Harvest, the winning story in question, is a poetic and emotive tale which follows an ageing cockler in west Wales as he grapples with the modern ways of the world and its effects on his livelihood. Despite the difference in style from multiple authors, each short story offers a distinctive perspective. There’s reminiscing in Rachel Powell’s Bricks And Sticks, and tragedy in The Pier by Emma Moyle, all combining to provide a unique and insightful journey.

Atmospheric, suspenseful and full of symbolism, it’s encouraging to see the wealth of Wales-based talent showcased in the short story form; Harvest offers excitement at what the future holds.
