HALESTORM

Back From The Dead (Atlantic)

US rockers Halestorm’s fifth studio album follows 2018’s Vicious, a deserved number eight in the UK charts. These 11 songs should follow suit, or thereabouts. Back From The Dead’s title track and Wicked Ways smash open this album, fast, heavy and loud, while The Steeple impressively boasts a catchy descending melodic guitar riff, with finger tapping solo to boot.

RELATED: ‘Fontaines DC’s Skinty Fia effectively picks up where 2020’s A Hero’s Death left off, drifting further away from debut Dogrel into more reflective and mature territory.’

Terrible Things puts the brakes on, bringing a deft drop in tempo and somewhat haunting feel amongst the 100mph rock’n’roll: just three and a half minutes of calm, until you’re thrown back in to the drum-thumping, guitar-shredding rock show. With Bombshell and Psycho Crazy the pick of the closing tracks, Halestorm remains a band who sounds as good on record as they do live. A group of four musically gifted individuals, album closer Raise Your Horns confirms Lzzy Hale as one of the best female vocalists currently active.

words OWEN SCOURFIELD

KEEP READING: ‘Once again Salem has conquered Cardiff, and on this evidence, it won’t be long before Will Gould finds himself in two successful rock bands.’

APPLICATIONS for spring term 22 are now Closed: If you’re 18-30, live in Wales, and want to get ahead in the creative and cultural industries, express your interest for autumn term.
