FRANKIE ROSE
Love As Projection (Night School)
On Frankie Rose’s ethereal fifth studio album Love As Projection, her first to be recorded for Scottish label Night School following their reissue of 2017’s Cure-covering Seventeen Seconds, her whimsical vocals shine throughout. Though encapsulating 80s-style electronic pop, she brings her own unique stamp to it.
Second track Anything is a standout, Rose’s distinctive vocals and catchy refrain (“Anything, everything, any time at all…”) complementing the synthpop sound. Production here is sublime, a perfectly layered instrumental section capturing the New Yorker’s sound and getting the album off to a powerful start.
The almost interlude-like Feel Light slows the pace, letting the listener have a breather from the fast-paced, intricate songs we’ve already heard, but Rose resumes that tempo with DOA and Come Back: two other standout tracks with high-powered choruses and beautifully written lyrics. LP closer Song For A Horse not only references the album title in its lyrics, but cleverly mirrors a horse cantering in its rhythms. Love As Projection is certainly worth a listen if you’re into electronic pop.
