ELECTRIC CALLBOY
Tekkno (Century Media)
German electro-rockers Electric Callboy is an interesting band, to say the least, but new album Tekkno, whilst fun in parts, makes for a slightly disappointing return. Opening with the euphoric Pump It (entered into this year’s Eurovision, though rejected by the German juries), the album starts strong, especially with the deliciously tongue-in-cheek Fuckboi, readymade for an alternative dancefloor.
However, the strong start soon fizzles out to some disappointing dirge: tracks such as Tekkno Train and Arrow Of Love are difficult to enjoy. There is, at least, some small light in the form of the short-yet-sweet Hurrikan – dripping with 90s Europop sensibilities that hit the spot nicely, for the first minute, before descending into whiplash of a heavy breakdown. For a band that has been going for 12 years now (this is their debut album under this name, changed from Eskimo Callboy earlier this year), Tekkno does near enough what it needs to do.
