Logic @ Rainbow Rooms, Gorseinon
Sun 28 May
Hard dance has always been massive in the valleys of south Wales. While tracking it down in Cardiff has become a tall order since the demise of long-running boshfest Bionic, devotees of the tougher stuff continue to flock to events outside of the capital in their droves.
Crowd-surfing, deck-scratching Eddie Halliwell is one of the scene’s hardest-working and longest-serving soldiers. His early sets combined the energy of hard dance with the sort of turntable trickery usually found in hip-hop. In fact, he was one of the first DJs to push the technological limits of the then-new CDJ technology in the early 00s. He was even called upon by gear manufacturer Pioneer to help develop the DJM909 mixer and CDJ2000, the industry standard CD and digital turntable, and his loyal fanbase often report plumes of smoke coming from the decks, such is the ferocity of his scratching. Alright, we may have made that last bit up.
While Eddie’s sound has moved on since the early 90s (you’re just as likely to hear him throwing down electrohouse sounds as you are hard dance) it’s still a rare treat to see and hear the Wigan-born veteran in a smaller venue. Much smaller, in fact than the enormous venues in the big cities or the vast Judgement parties at Eden in Ibiza for which he’s famous for. Come prepared for a tops-off romp.
