Dave Brock Presents This Was Your Future: Space Rock & Other Psychedelics (1978-1998) (Cherry Red)

Dave Brock, at the helm of the willfully independent, scene-setting Hawkwind, invites you to pick up your telescope and gaze at the musical universe created by him and his fellow space rock travellers for This Was Your Future.

RELATED: ‘Fontaines DC’s Skinty Fia effectively picks up where 2020’s A Hero’s Death left off, drifting further away from debut Dogrel into more reflective and mature territory.’

Spanning 20 years, this three-CD collection captures the countercultural scene spearheaded by Hawkwind and fomented at the free festivals of the 1980s. Space rock may be the genre, but the term is a broad church as this compilation demonstrates: flowing as it does from the new wave-leaning Pictures In My Mind by the Magic Mushroom Band, the prog riffings of Norwegian group Tangle Edge, to the glam stomp of sci-fi icon Michael Moorcock’s forays into music.

A number of songs on This Was Your Future had only previously appeared on cassettes sold at festivals; as such, Cherry Red have done us a great service in bringing this weird and wonderful moment of musical and social history out of the shadows.

words ADAM ALLINGTON-JONES

KEEP READING: ‘With a wide repertoire of hits, Simple Minds had the 6,000 strong crowd at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff in their palm of their hands.’

APPLICATIONS for spring term 22 are now Closed: If you’re 18-30, live in Wales, and want to get ahead in the creative and cultural industries, express your interest for autumn term.
