Nigerian-born computer scientist Josh Whyte, aka Cardiff’s own Blank Face, brought incredible energy and great tunes to his first headline show last Saturday. Fusing sounds of r’n’b, Afro-soul, hip-hop and gospel, his music is primed to appeal to the masses, and with a plethora of guests (my personal favourite being Valley Boy Zero), both local and from across the bridge, Blank Face really put on a show that will certainly be remembered.
The Moon was filled to the brim with supporters, and the night’s subtitle ‘Manifesting Greatness’ was a pledge most definitely fulfilled. Every act emphasised the importance of self-love and embracing one’s success, which lifted the crowd’s mood significantly for the rest of the night. Blank Face put in huge amounts of work to pull this event off, telling me beforehand that he had produced everything from the scheduling and hire space to the merch sales and marketing.
High-intensity energy flowed out of the stage, out of the venue and into the streets of Cardiff as Blank Face began his set. His live vocals are incredible, sounding exactly like the studio versions, and he interacted with the crowd as much as humanly possible. Accompanied by his DJs and announcer, Whyte danced across the stage which encouraged the crowd to do the same, but he did not appear to tire of it at all. Performing comes naturally to Blank Face; his energy never wavered, and the crowd loved every minute. Blank Face is releasing an EP this year named Cycles, and his new single The Jump is out now on streaming platforms.
