Wales’ capital truly has a bit of something for everyone during winter. Aside from its outstanding parks and green spaces, there is also a host of the best nature walks and trails in and around Cardiff. Varying from rich woodland trails to stunning seaside strolls, there is much to explore – as Megan Tomos outlines.
SALMON LEAPS TRAIL
Beginning in the village of Dinas Powys, the Salmon Leaps Trail is a pleasant, peaceful ‘figure of eight’ loop stretching for five miles on gentle terrain, or three if you take the shorter route. Follow the path through a magical wooded glacial valley, and alongside a majestic blue stream that is home to, as legend has it, the occasional leaping fish. Be advised that this quiet countryside walk also gets very muddy in winter…

GARTH HILL
A short drive from Cardiff is Garth Hill, a moderate and rewarding hike that offers some of the best panoramic views of the area, and the Cardiff skyline on a clear day! The Garth has several routes varying in difficulty and length but remains one of the easier mountain walks in south Wales. On the way down, a stop at the infamous Gwaelod-y-Garth Inn pub is a must for some comforting and delicious food.
PENARTH TO LAVERNOCK POINT LINEAR WALK
Follow this small section of the Wales Coast Path along the dramatic coastline of Penarth to Lavernock, stretching for a total of 9.3km on a combination of pavement and country pathways. Enjoy the refreshing sea breeze on this easy and calming costal trail, as well as unbeatable views across the English Channel and beyond. The path begins and ends near a children’s park, within easy reach of Penarth’s seafront for any much-needed food or drink.

CASTELL COCH
The majestic Castell Coch is not to be missed during winter: as if straight out of a fairy tale, it’s a delight for all the family in the crisp, frosty air of the season. Explore the castle grounds and take a walk through the magical Fforest Fawr that ascends up a small hill and opens up to numerous heritage trails to choose from. Castell Coch is only a short drive outside of Cardiff, and can also be reached by foot or bike following the Taff Trail towards Tongwynlais.
CARDIFF BAY TRAIL
This 10km circular trail is a long but pleasant walk that showcases some of the best of the city’s sights. The trail takes you through Cardiff’s historic docks, past some of the city’s infamous landmarks in the bay and across to the calming Penarth Marina. Along the way you’ll find plenty of places to eat and drink, as well as toilets and parks. It is a great option for some fresh coastal air away from the busy streets of the city.
