With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, this time of the year really does have a sprinkling of love in the air (or is that just rain?). Elizabeth Morris recommends some romantic outdoor walking spots to enjoy this February to enjoy in and outside of Wales with that special someone… or just yourself.
Llanddwyn Island, Anglesey
The Welsh patron saint of lovers, St Dwynwen, is said to be buried on the island of Llanddwyn, making it romantic in both history and scenery. Take a stroll along Newborough beach, with its breathtaking views of mountains across the bay, and visit a well that’s said to predict if you and your partner are true lovers.

Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol
Bristol’s quaint village of Clifton is home to independent shops and cafes, a Victorian shopping arcade, an outdoor market and a famous suspension bridge. Arrive just before sunset for a spectacular view of the bridge, and perhaps pop into the White Lion Bar to clink a drink or two as the sun sets.

Portmeirion, Gwynedd
Fancy yourself some Italian romance without leaving Wales? Portmeirion was developed by architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis to give the town an Italianate charm while enhancing the natural beauty of the Welsh coast that surrounds it. Visit a spa, play chess in the piazza and sip tea from Portmeirion pottery, all whilst taking in the quirky architecture.

Barafundle Bay, Pembrokeshire
With its golden sands and crystal blue waters, Barfundle Bay beach is often regarded as the closest you can get to the Caribbean in the UK. While February is a bit cool for swimming (unless you’re extremely brave), it’s the perfect time to visit for a coastal walk with unspoiled natural beauty.

Laburnum Arch, Conwy
Laburnum Arch in Conwy is a 180-foot flower tunnel that blooms with golden blossoms in the spring, but is just as pretty in colder weather. The tunnel lies within the botanical Bodnant Garden, and its fairytale-like garden would make for a uniquely romantic stroll.
Admission: £14.80. Info: here
Skomer Island, Pembrokeshire
Skomer is home to the largest puffin breeding colony in southern Britain – alongside a plethora of other wildlife, including a vast array of sea birds, rabbits, voles, seals, and dolphins. It’s the perfect date spot for nature lovers.
