Be More Chill
Dylan Thomas Theatre, Swansea
Wed 25-Sat 28 July
Alongside his three other young adult novels, including It’s Kind Of A Funny Story, Ned Vizzini’s debut novel Be More Chill was adapted into a musical production in New Jersey in 2015, and is premiering in the UK this month at Swansea’s Dylan Thomas Theatre after the play was a cult success in the USA and Australia – the soundtrack is even soon to be released on vinyl.
The play tells the story of Jeremy Heere, portrayed by Dylan Hopkins (Rent, Macbeth, American Idiot), an average teenager who learns that The Squip (Super Quantum Unit Intel Processor), a tiny supercomputer, can bring him everything he wants in the world. A date with Christine, an invite to the biggest rave of the year and the possibility of surviving in his suburban high school all suddenly seem possible – but is it worth the gamble?
With music by the award-winning musical theatre writer Joe Iconis (Things To Ruin, The Plant That Ate Dirty Socks), the production is proudly being brought to Swansea by its local young and exciting theatre group Self Proclaimed Theatre Company, who earlier this year brought American Idiot to the stage. With the late Vizzini’s novels loved by young adults across the world, Swansea’s premiere of Be More Chill is likely to be a popular production in its four-night stay at one of the city’s thriving community theatres.
